ERNST & YOUNG STUDY ON X-MAS SALES 2014

I really like getting gifts and a study by Ernst & Young shows that Germans are planning on spending significantly less for Christmas gifts in 2014… SAY WHAT????

The average German gift budget is only € 219, which is 20% less than last year. The lion share of this (€ 151) will be spent in retail outlets and only 18% (€ 40) will be spend on internet orders. This is a lot less than last year (23% and € 64) and far less than I personally thought!

Good news for all retailers amongst us. No good news for our online shop owners. However, there is another study which has a much more optimistic view on the upcoming online holiday shopping season.

An amazing amount of € 10 billion will be spent on the internet by Germans in this years holiday season according to a study published by the German Trade Association. This is an increase of 18% towards last year and it accounts to 12% of total Christmas sales in Germany. The Christmas season is even more important to the online retailers than to traditional retailers. They make 25% of their total revenue between November and December while traditional retailers make about 19% in the same period.
